Rule Submission TitleElectronic Equipment
USAP Board VoteDisapproved
USAP Board Vote ReasonThe current rule is appropriate. Although hearing aids necessary for players with hearing impairments could potentially be misused for illegal communication, the legitimate need for these devices outweighs the risk of misuse. In contrast, other forms of electronic equipment that could facilitate communication are not essential for players to wear. It remains appropriate to prohibit such equipment.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

Technology has made it all but impossible for referees and opponents to tell when a player is using technology for coaching.  By designating when it can be used we are able to properly embrace technology and keep the flow of the game moving.  This will also make the officials job easier.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

In an officiated match, at the end of the rally a player acts as if they are involved in a conversation with a third party though their hearing aid or sunglasses.  Currently the referee has to assume that they are or are not receiving coaching and decide to assess a penalty or not.  This places the referee in a bad position.  By this change the player can engage in a conversation as long as it complies with the coaching rule. They can even place a door dash order if they have time.

At the end of the rally a player looks intently at their smart watch. Are they receiving coaching or getting their heart rate?  The referee will not know. In a non officiated match there is nobody to police this.  This change solves that.
