Rule Submission TitleAllowed modifications for Pro-level matches
USAP Board VoteFailure Confirmed
USAP Rules Committee VoteFailed
USAP Rules Committee Vote ReasonThe proposal is too wide open, leaving the TD the ability to do almost anything they want and without the approval of USAP. The proposal would allow rule modifications to be made by the TD prior the start of a match or a bracket, which is inappropriate. Players should know before registration for a tournament of any rule modifications. If there are special event formats or scoring rules desired, they should be proposed either individually or as a group of changes for inclusion in the Rulebook. The proposal that rules must not make a mockery of the game is vague, subjective and cannot be enforced with consistency across the sport.
Existing Rule #Preamble
Proposed Rule Change

Add additional paragraph before this one with the following:

Matches in the Professional Divisions May used modified versions of these rules set by the tournament director. For example, there may be rules dealing with instant replay or alternative scoring methods for time constraints. These changes need to be clearly communicated to the players and referees prior to the start of the match. No rule modification can be made that makes a mockery of the sport of pickleball.

Original Rule Text

Non-sanctioned tournaments may also use these sections as guidelines. Tournament Directors for non-sanctioned tournaments may be flexible in the use of these guidelines to better fit the skills, ages, and diversity of their players. USA Pickleball enthusiastically encourages these non-sanctioned tournaments to promote knowledge and growth of the sport, and skill development, while having fun playing pickleball.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

There are already pro tours (PPA/MLP) that use modified rules. Those modified rules should be allowed as part of this rulebook.

Amateur divisions should use all the rules specified in this rulebook.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

Any pro tours.
