USAP Board Vote ReasonWe are handling situations like this appropriately. There are commonly situations where no call is needed for balls that are obviously out
Existing Rule #6.C.7
Proposed Rule Change

6.C.7. All “out” calls must be promptly signaled by voice and/or hand signal, unless a player is mute or otherwise unable to use their voice.

Original Rule Text

6.C.7. All “out” calls must be promptly signaled by voice and/or hand signal.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

As a referee often I am not looking at a player.  When a player only uses a hand signal, the referee may not see the hand signal.  This is especially a problem with balls that are returned. Raising a finger after the ball has been struck, may be too late to make a valid line call, especially is the referee is not looking at the player. Requiring a verbal signal would make life so much easier for everyone.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

Any line call.
