| Rule Submission Title | Current, clear and inclusive language |
|---|---|
| USAP Board Vote | Disapproved |
| USAP Board Vote Reason | Sportsmanship is a generic term that is not antiquated. It is generally understood to be gender neutral. |
| Existing Rule # | Term: Sportsmanship |
| Proposed Rule Change | To replace the term “good sportsmanship” with the term “Integrity”. |
| Original Rule Text | Term: “good sportsmanship” |
| Reasoning Behind Suggested Change | Sportsmanship is an antiquated gendered term just as Policeman, Fireman or Mailman were. When any of these terms are used what is visualized is a male. So it follows that this term is discriminatory. In current language neutral or inclusive terms/titles are used such as Police Officer, Fire Fighter and Mail Carrier. A small change in language can make a big difference in reflecting inclusiveness values for both adults and children playing the sport of Pickleball. |
