| Original Rule Text | 11.K. Net Posts. It is a fault if a player contacts the net post while the ball is live. A ball contacting the net post results in a dead ball and the team that hit the ball loses the rally.
|
| Reasoning Behind Suggested Change | The receiving player had a legal opportunity to return the ball prior to the ball becoming dead (striking the net post) and failed to do so. As currently written, this is a fault on the hitting player rather than the receiving player. |
| Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies | A player hits the ball over the net where it bounces once on the receiving player's court, but due to backspin, wind, or other factors, the ball bounces back into the net where it touches the net post. The current verbiage of 11.K.1 assigns fault to the player / team that hit the ball. In this case, that player / team already made a legal shot, and it is their opponent's responsibility to make the next shot. The fault should be on the player / team that had the opportunity to make a legal shot and failed to do so prior to the ball becoming dead. This also impacts plays where the ball bounces back over net on its own and a player reaches across the net to make a shot. If their shot bounces on the opponent's side of the court and then hits the net post, this rule change would make it a fault on the receiving team for failing to make a legal shot, rather than on the hitting team that did make a legal shot. |
