Rule Submission TitleRound Robin tiebreaker process
USAP Board VoteApproved with Amendment
USAP Board Vote ReasonThe change is appropriate for the reasons given by the submitter. The amendment is needed because total points scored across all matches in the round robin is not a fair criteria if the number of teams in each pool is not equal.
Existing Rule #12.C.4
Proposed Rule Change (edited)

2026 Rule:

15.B.4 Round Robin. All singles players or doubles teams play each other. The winner is determined based on the highest number of matches won. When two or more teams are tied for the number of matches won, ties must be broken in accordance with the sequence in Rules 15.B.4.a through 15.B.4.f. The method that succeeds in breaking the tie will be used to rank all tied teams.

15.B.4.f Fifth Tie-Breaker. The fifth tie-breaker is the highest number of points scored across all matches in the round robin. This tie-breaker does not apply across multiple pools where the number of teams in each pool is not equal.

2025 Rules

"REVISE PROPOSED 12.C.4.f: Fifth tie-breaker: Total points scored across all matches in the round robin. This tie-breaker shall not apply across multiple pools where the number of teams in each pool is not equal.
REVISE CURRENT 12.C.4.b: Second tie-breaker: Point differential of all games played. This tie-breaker shall not apply across multiple pools where the number of teams in each pool is not equal. (e.g., Team A won Match 1 11-8, 11-4, so they would have a point differential of +10. Team A then wins the second match 11-9, 2-11, 11-6. For this round, they would have a point differential of -2. This would give them a total for the day of +8.)"

Proposed Rule Change

New
12.C.4.f. Fifth tie-breaker: total points scored across all matches in the round robin.
12.C.4.g. Sixth tie-breaker: random action (e.g. Coin flip).

Original Rule Text

None. The existing tie breaker methods and order will not change. The new methods are added to the end of the list

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

There exist 'edge case' scenarios where a tie cannot be broken, even after all four tiebreaker rules have been applied. For example, in a 3 team RR where all teams are 1-1 against the others and all scores are identical. This scenario requires at least a coin flip rule.  I am also suggesting (well it really wasn't my idea) to add a total points tiebreaker because we don't relly want to go to the coin toss.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

Three team RR, all teams 1-1, all scores identical (e.g. 11-9)
