Original Rule Text

2.G.1.   Safety and Distraction.  A player may be required to change apparel that is inappropriate, including that which approximates the color of the ball.

2.G.2.  Depictions.  Graphics, insignias, pictures, and writing on apparel must be in good taste.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

The word "inappropriate" allows misuse of the rule in that anyone can claim that anything is inappropriate in their opinion.  If approached with a complaint about a player's apparel of choice, the tournament director will more than likely approve and enforce a change of apparel even if he /she does not see anything inappropriate.

This obscure rule allows any player to take advantage of any other player and gives the tournament director the otherwise unnecessary role of judge, juror and executioner.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

Player A is wearing a shirt that does not approximate the color of the ball but has a black and white checkerboard pattern on it.  Player B, complains to the tournament director that the checkerboard pattern is a problem as it draws his attention away from the game and the ball and is basically a distraction to him.  The tournament director is now required to make a call as to whether the shirt is a distraction.  Not wanting to argue or imply that player B is wrong,  TD must ask player A to change his shirt.

The rule can be mis-used by anyone wanting to gain a psychological advantage before even starting a match.
