Existing Rule # | 6.D.8 |
Proposed Rule Change | 6.D.8. All “out” calls must be made “promptly”; otherwise, the ball is presumed to still be in play. When the player returns the 'out' ball, “promptly” is defined as calling “out” prior to the return being hit by the opponent or before the return becomes dead. |
Original Rule Text | 6.D.8. All “out” calls must be made “promptly”; otherwise, the ball is presumed to still be in play. “Promptly” is defined as calling “out” prior to the ball being hit by the opponent or before the ball becomes dead. |
Reasoning Behind Suggested Change | This clarifies that a person can call a ball out that becomes dead very quickly. |
Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies | Team A hits a deep ball to Team B. The ball bounces out and then immediately hits one player on the leg, before they call it out. Based on 6.D.8 as written, Team B can no longer call the ball out, since the ball is technically dead when it bounced out and certainly when it hit the player. I don't think that any ref would actually prevent an out call in this situation, but I think the wording of the rule needs to be cleaned up. |
