USAP Rules Committee Voting StatusFailed. We are fine with the temporary solution for mini-singles. Definitely would not want a dashed line.
Existing Rule #2.B. Lines and Areas
Proposed Rule Change

Connect the two center lines with either a dashed white or solid yellow line, the phantom line.

This rule should be optional thru 2025, after which it can become mandatory, to allow all courts plenty of time to implement it.

Original Rule Text

The lines and areas of the standard pickleball court are explained below.

2.B.5.  Centerline. The line down the center of the court on either side of the net extending from the NVZ to the baseline separating the odd and even courts.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

• The phantom line would make it easier to tell if a shot in the kitchen is in or out when playing “skinny singles” (2 players defending facing half courts), “diagonal singles” (2 players defending diagonal half courts), or “skinny triples” (2 players on one side defending full court vs. 1 on the other side defending half a court).

• It would be utterly irrelevant for all other purposes, thus the difference in appearance and the ethereal name.

• Its visibility would inspire people to learn about variations on standard doubles, so they wouldn’t have to go home or have someone sit out if players failed to show up.

• It’s just a cool name, and that makes pickleball more fun, right?

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

Whenever there are fewer than 4 players available.
