| Rule Submission Title | Challenging a Player or Position Error During a Rally |
|---|---|
| Existing Rule # | 5.C.1 |
| Proposed Rule Change | 5.C.1 Challenging a Player or Position Error During a Rally. A player may stop a rally to claim an incorrect server, incorrect receiver, or incorrect player position before the return of serve is hit and before the ball becomes dead. 5.C.1.d Fault – Late Challenge to a Player or Position Error. When a player stops a rally to claim an incorrect server, incorrect receiver, or incorrect player position after the return of serve is hit, it is a fault against the player who stopped the rally., |
| Original Rule Text | 5.C.1 Player or Position Error Claimed During Rally. Any player may stop a rally to claim an incorrect server, incorrect receiver, or incorrect player position. |
| Reasoning Behind Suggested Change | This change provides consistency between the rules governing Player or Position Error challenges and the existing rules governing Score Call challenges, specifically Rules 6.F.1 (Replay) and 6.F.3 (Fault – Late Challenge to Score Call). Currently, a player may stop a rally at any time to claim an incorrect server, receiver, or player position, even after several shots have been played. This differs from score challenges, which must be made before the return of serve is hit. The inconsistency can create confusion for players and officials and may result in rallies being interrupted after play has substantially progressed. By requiring player or position error challenges to be made before the return of serve is hit, the rule would: • Establish a uniform standard for all service-related challenges. • Encourage players to identify and address errors immediately. • Reduce unnecessary interruptions after a rally is underway. • Preserve rally outcomes by allowing play to continue when a challenge is not raised promptly. • Simplify rule application for referees and tournament officials. • Promote sportsmanship by requiring players to raise known player-position errors immediately rather than waiting to see whether the rally outcome is favourable. • Discourage gamesmanship and strategic late challenges based on the result of the rally. This proposal promotes fairness, consistency, sportsmanship, and efficient match administration while aligning player-position challenges with existing score-challenge procedures. |
| Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies | Scenario 1 – Early Challenge The receiving team notices that the wrong player is serving. Before the return of serve is hit, a receiver stops play and claims an incorrect server. The rally is stopped and the player-position issue is resolved according to existing correction procedures. Scenario 2 – Late Challenge During Rally The receiving team notices that the wrong player is serving but allows the return of serve and several additional shots to be played. During the rally, a player stops play and claims an incorrect server. Because the return of serve has already been hit, the challenge is late and results in a fault against the player who stopped the rally. Scenario 3 – Incorrect Receiver Identified After Rally Begins A serve is made to the wrong receiver. The receiving team returns the serve and play continues. After several shots, a player stops the rally and claims an incorrect receiver. Because the challenge was not made before the return of serve was hit, the player who stopped the rally commits a fault. Scenario 4 – Incorrect Player Position A doubles team is positioned incorrectly at the start of a point. Neither team notices until after the return of serve has been hit. A player stops the rally to claim a player-position error. The challenge is late and results in a fault against the player who stopped the rally. Scenario 5 – Delayed Challenge A receiver recognizes before the serve that the wrong player is serving but chooses not to stop play. After the return of serve is hit, the rally continues and the receiving team is placed at a competitive disadvantage during the point. The receiver then stops the rally after several shots and claims an incorrect server. Under the proposed rule, the challenge is untimely because it was not made before the return of serve was hit. The player who stopped the rally commits a fault. This prevents players from delaying a challenge until after the rally has developed and encourages known player or position errors to be raised at the earliest opportunity.
