USA Pickleball Rule Changes
Suggested USA Pickleball Rule Changes for 2027
Rule change submissions for the 2027 rulebook process are currently closed.
| Rule Submission Title | Release position |
|---|---|
| Existing Rule # | 7.D.1 |
| Proposed Rule Change | Release Position. The server must release the ball from a natural (unaided) height. The hand and body must be stationary and the palm must be facing down. Release occurs by opening fingers and not moving hand or wrist or arm until ball is clearly released. Exception: if a person only had one hand, the ball may be rolled off the paddle. |
| Original Rule Text | Release Position. The server must release the ball from a natural (unaided) height. |
| Reasoning Behind Suggested Change | This codifies the original intent of the dropped ball. This also eliminated rolling the ball and adding spin. Instead of adding to 7.D.1. The text could be a standalone subsection i.e. 7.D.5. |
| Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies | Over the years since the drop serve was added, there have been many variations and this gets back to the basic concept of a "dropped" ball. |
