Original Rule Text

All lines should be 2 inches (5.08 cm) wide and the same color, clearly contrasting with the color of the playing surface and court.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

One of the most identifying features of pickleball is the court, and that must have an immutable standard, which includes line width.  Changing "should" to "must" gives no leeway to that standard.  Also, as it is now written, the line color may be the same color as the bordering playing area, thus creating an indifferentiable area that must still be judged. Mandating lines of a contrasting color to its adjacent colors improves line visibility and reduces line-call disputes caused by visual ambiguity.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

The definite line width would apply to all courts and not allow any alteration to the iconic design of those courts.

A contrasting line-color requirement would help prevent mistakes by inexperienced court painters and customers.  I recently saw this issue locally, where a government-built court used white for both the playing lines and surrounding border areas, making the lines difficult to distinguish.  I didn't think they were done painting, but apparently they were.
