| Rule Submission Title | eliminate verbal not ready signals from rulebook |
|---|---|
| Existing Rule # | 6.E |
| Proposed Rule Change | Remove 6.E, promoting 6.E.1 to be 6.E 6.E Question About the Score. Before the serve is hit, a player may ask their opponent for the correct score. The opponent must respond with the appropriate information. |
| Original Rule Text | 6.E Stop Play Indicators. After the start of the score call, verbal indicators to stop play such as “stop” and “wait” will be recognized. 6.E.1 Question About the Score. Before the serve is hit, a player may ask their opponent for the correct score. The opponent must respond with the appropriate information. |
| Reasoning Behind Suggested Change | Substitute 6.E.1 for the current 6.E Why would we tell them that they can stop play with a "Wait" or a "Whoa, Nelly" or whatever? Put it in the Handbook so that officials know how to handle it when it comes up but that's all that's needed. |
| Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies | The official looks at the receiver to make sure they aren't showing a not ready signal and starts their score call. As the server is swinging at the ball there's a muttered "uh, oh. just a moment" from the receiver's end of the court. Now the official has to decide what to do because it's actually in the Rulebook that that should be considered a not ready signal. If it's not in the Rulebook, the official can use their discretion. |
