Rule Submission TitleProfessional Play Line Call and Overrule
Existing Rule #13
Proposed Rule Change

There isn't currently a rule that addresses line calls and over rules for professional play.  This request is to have a rule created for professional play for line calls and overrule of those calls.   Here is what we are suggesting.

Pro Line Call Overrule:

Pro OUT Line Calls Overruled by Referee or Video Review:  Pro players are subject to a maximum number of good faith but overruled OUT line calls, after which subsequent overruled OUT calls will be deemed unsportsmanlike and subject the player/team to the following:

All games (2/3 games to 11, 15, or 21; 1 game to 11, 15, or 21) with or without Video Review:

  • 3rd OUT line call overruled by Referee or Video Review - technical warning.
  • 4th OUT line call overruled by Referee or Video Review- technical foul.
  • 5th OUT line call overruled by Referee or Video Review - loss of current game, or if last point of a game, loss of next game in match.
  • 6th OUT line call overruled by Referee or Video Review - loss of match.

The above progression is for good faith line calls.  If a Referee determines at any time that a line call is not in good faith (e.g., a ball landing in the center of the court called OUT), the Referee may issue a technical warning or a technical foul.

Pro Line Call Challenge Policy:

Pro Challenges to Opponent OUT Calls:  Pro players are subject to a maximum number of good faith unsuccessful challenges to opponents’ OUT line calls, after which continued challenges will be deemed unsportsmanlike and subject the player/team to the following:

All games (2/3 games to 11, 15, or 21; 1 game to 11, 15, or 21) with or without Video Review:

  • 3rd unsuccessful challenge - technical warning.
  • 4th unsuccessful challenge - technical foul.
  • 5th unsuccessful challenge - loss of current game, or if last point of a game, loss of next game in match.
  • 6th unsuccessful challenge - loss of match.

The above progression is for good faith challenges to opponent OUT line calls. If a Referee determines at any time that a challenge is not in good faith (e.g., asserted to harass or intimidate an opponent or asserted in an unsportsmanlike manner), the Referee may issue a technical warning or a technical foul.

Note: players would not be allowed to challenge their own line calls

Original Rule Text

Line calls are addressed for amateur play under 13.C, 13.D and 13.F, but we are requesting a rule be created for line calls for professional play.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

The rationale behind the overrule policy is to prevent extended and/or repeated disputes regarding line calls by imposing consequences on pro players who either (1) make repeated overruled lines calls and/or (2) assert repeated unsubstantiated challenges to an opponent’s line calls.  It is anticipated that this rule will be used sparingly when players’ line calls disputes are repeated and escalating throughout a match. This rule provide Referees another tool, in addition to general sportsmanship rules, to ensure fair play in a match.
