Rule Submission TitleLine Call Definition Clarity
Existing Rule #3.A.19
Proposed Rule Change

3.A.19.  Line Call – A loud word(s) spoken by a player or line
judge(s) to indicate to the referee and/or players that
a live ball has not landed in the required court space.
The preferred word to indicate a line call is “OUT.”
Distinctive hand signals can be used in conjunction
with a line call. Words such as “wide”, “long”, “no”,
“deep” are also acceptable. Note: Line calls are "out" calls only which stop a live rally. (There is no aspect as an "in" line call.)

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

To provide clarity that a line call is ONLY an "out" call and making a line call stops a live rally. The concept of "playing the ball" is the same as making an "in call" is not a valid concept.  The only application of a ball being ruled as "in" is when a live ball is not returned by a player and the player did not make an appropriate, timely "out" call. By rule, the ball is determined to be in.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

The receiver returns the serve after it has bounced. The receiver's return goes into the net and lands on the ground and the receiver does NOT make an "out" call. The receiver then appeals to the referee saying, "Was that ball in or out?"  The referee reminds them that no "out" call was made and that they chose to return the ball and the ball is dead and they lose the rally. The player then says, "Well, I want to appeal my "in" call."  The referee reminds them that there is no such animal as an "in" call when they choose to play the ball. The result of the rally stands.
