Rule Submission TitleChange Momentum Definition
Existing Rule #3.A.21
Proposed Rule Change

3.A.21  Momentum – Momentum is a property of a body in motion, such as a player executing a volley, that
causes the player to continue in motion after contacting the ball. The act of volleying produces momentum that ends when the player regains balance and control of their motion or stops moving toward the non-volley zone.

Original Rule Text

3.A.21  Momentum – Momentum is a property of a body in motion, such as a player executing a volley, that
causes the player to continue in motion after contacting the ball. The act of volleying produces momentum that ends when the player regains balance and control of their motion or stops moving toward the non-volley zone.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

A player can still commit an NVZ violation even though they are not moving towards the NVZ. Example: A player poaches a shot and is running parallel to the NVZ but at the end, stumbles and their hand falls into the zone. Their body has "stopped moving towards the NVZ" but they still committed an NVZ violation. This is a minor change, but removes debate points concerning the definition and eventual application on the courts.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

Partner A poaches and volleys a shot while moving to their right. After the volley and while moving slightly away from the zone (from the momentum of the volley) the player stumbles and their hand touches the NVZ. This would be an NVZ violation even though they had "stopped moving towards the non-volley zone."
