Rule Submission TitleTie-Breaker Clarification
Existing Rule #12.C.4
Proposed Rule Change

12.C.4. Round Robin. All players/teams play each other.  Games may use any of the approved tournament scoring options. (See Rule 12.B.) The first-place player/teamwinner is determined based on number of matches won. If two or more teams are tied, ties shall be broken in accordance with 12.C.4.a. through 12.C.4.e. These ties will be broken one team at a time.  Once you determine a winner from the tied teams, you start the tie-breaker process (12.C.4.a. through 12.C.4.e.) over with the remaining teams to determine the next place finish.  You continue with this process until all of the originally tied players/teams is placed in the correct order of finish. Once a tie has been broken, any subsequent ties in the bracket shall be broken by going back to 12.C.4.a. and continuing through each successive tie-breaker until a winner is determined.

Original Rule Text

12.C.4. Round Robin. All players/teams play each other.  Games may use any of the approved tournament scoring options. (See Rule 12.B.) The winner is determined based on number of matches won. If two or more teams are tied, ties shall be broken in accordance with 12.C.4.a. through 12.C.4.e. Once a tie has been broken, any subsequent ties in the bracket shall be broken by going back to 12.C.4.a. and continuing through each successive tie-breaker until a winner is determined.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

12.C.4. is very difficult to understand.  When 12.C.4.b. doesn't break the tie because all the teams that are tied have each beaten each other, you must move on to the next tie-breaker which is 12.C.4.c.  Now if team "A" is a +8, team "B" is a +6 and team "C" is a -4 then there does not seem to be any more "subsequent ties" since they all have a different point differential score so the order of finish appears complete.

The problem stems from the fact that many TD’s and Operations personnel don’t realize that 12.C.4.c is only being used to determine the first-place team.  The remaining teams that were in the original tie go back to the tie-breaker system and have their finishing placement finalized using 12.C.4.d. through 12.C.4.e.

I feel that we should remove the verbiage concerning "any subsequent ties" and change it to something like, "Once the first place team has been determined, all the other players/teams finishing positions will be determined using rules 12.C.4.a through 12.C.4.e.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

Three or more  teams are tied at the end of a round robin tournament and you must figure out how the teams should be seeded for the medals or for a playoff.
