Original Rule Text

12.C.4. Round Robin. All players/teams play each other. Games may use any of the approved tournament scoring options. (See Rule 12.B.) The winner is determined based on number of matches won. If two or more teams are tied, ties shall be broken in accordance with 12.C.4.a. through 12.C.4.e. Once a tie has been broken, any subsequent ties in the bracket shall be broken by going back to 12.C.4.a. and USA PICKLEBALL Official Rulebook (2024) 49 continuing through each successive tie-breaker until a winner is determined.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

It has been identified that some tournament platforms are not applying the RR tiebreaking algorithm correctly, when three of more teams are tied with the same number of wins. The current wording could be interpreted as only re-applying the tie breaker procedure if multiple groups of teams are tied with different numbers of wins. This change makes it more clear that, if more than 2 teams are tied with the same number of wins, the procedure must be applied multiple times, each time only deciding on one winner.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

If 3 teams are tied with the same number of wins, and are 1-1 in the H2H, the winner is often decided by the pool PD. That team (team A) is correctly identified as the top finisher among the 3.  That team is removed from subsequent iterations of the rule, and the second place finisher should subsequently be determined by the H2H between the remaining 2 teams, however some platforms use the pool PD to determine second.
