Proposed Rule Change

2.C.5. Net Height Measurement:

Sidelines -  At the location where the net crosses the sideline markers,  the top of the net shall be 36 inches  (+/- .25 inches) (91.44 +/- 0.635 centimeters)  from the playing surface.

Center   - At the center point on the court that is equidistant from both sideline markers (10 feet from each sideline) the top of the net shall be 34 inches (+/- .25 inches)  (86.36 +/- 0.635 centimeters) from the playing surface.  If there is a center strap located 10 feet from the sidelines, the top of the net at the center strap shall be 34 inches (+/- .25 inches) (86.36 +/- 0.635 centimeters) from the playing surface. Center Strap and Height. A center strap is recommended for a permanent net and must be placed at the center of the net to enable easy adjustment to the 34-inch (86.36-cm) requirement at center. The top shall be 36 inches (91.44 cm) high at the sidelines.

Change figure 2-1 to include net height at side line and center point.

Original Rule Text

2.C.5. Center Strap and Height. A center strap is recommended for a permanent net and must be placed at the center of the net to enable easy adjustment to the 34-inch (86.36-cm) requirement at center. The top shall be 36 inches (91.44 cm) high at the sidelines.

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

This makes the net height measurement cleaner and perhaps easier to understand. Current language is not clear from the playing surface to top of net height.

Also no tolerance given for nets.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

When setting up portable nets.  When checking permanent nets.

Venue is setting up nets for play and needs to know at what height nets should be adjusted to at sidelines and center.

Venue has existing nets that are out of adjustment.

Head Referee is out with the tape measure before a tournament starts and wants to train volunteers or beginning referees

Player falls onto net and it needs to be set back up. Wind blows net over and needs to be set up.
