Rule Submission TitleRemove NVZ violations when moving backwards for a Lob
Existing Rule #n/a
Proposed Rule Change

Add 9.I: There is no violation if a player inadvertently steps into the Non-volley zone in the process of stepping backwards, deeper into the court, to hit a lob.

Original Rule Text

n/a: this would be a new rule

Reasoning Behind Suggested Change

The primary intent of the NVZ is to prevent players from hitting volleys too close to the net.  It is counter intuitive to call a NVZ violation on a player who is lunging back after a ball over their head just because they performed a small step to propel themselves backwards.

This rule may not be feasible to implement, as it requires a judgement call from players or a referee.

Scenarios In Which the Rules Applies

Any lob during the normal run of play.
